The switching off of the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) and Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) has been put back to 31st January 2027. This gives operators and customers more time to switch services across to digital networks.

Why is the switch off happening?

• The analogue network is old, fragile, and expensive to maintain
• Modern communications demand more of the network and it can’t keep pace
• The UK has been upgrading to faster, more robust, internet-based communications

What does this mean for me?

• Traditional phone lines (PSTN) will need to move to a digital service
• Office lines (ISDN) should upgrade to the latest replacement services (SIP and VOIP)
• Broadband relying on a traditional phone line may need to be upgraded
• As the switch-off approaches, the PSTN will become more fragile and prone to faults
